More on our reduced energy consumption and CO2 emissions
Coats runs factories around the world, spinning, twisting and colouring threads. In many ways these are highly efficient operations, but they still depend on fuel sources.
Since 2000 we have been intensely investigating ways to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and minerals.
As a result since 2000, Coats has reduced energy consumption across our units by 47%.* Currently, Coats uses about 793m kW/H of energy per year and the massive overall reduction of energy consumption has been brought about a number of wide ranging changes.
Since 2000, we've reduced our energy consumption by 884m kWH. That translates to a 1.5 million tonnes reduction in our CO2 emissions.
In other words, we’ve saved enough energy to make everyone on the planet a cup of tea. Which might be considered rather British of us.
How did we achieve this?
We’ve attacked the problem on three fronts:
First, we have revised our processes, moving from high energy use to energy efficient practices.
Second, we have closed some of our older plants that used less energy efficient machinery and bloated infrastructure and we are replacing these with plants that are streamlined and modern both in terms of technology and architecture.
Third, over the last few years we have been consolidating our production into fewer plants overall.
This process will be continuing and we are studying the potential for combined heat and power systems for some of our major plants.
